The couple

Arne’s story

Born on January 20th 1973 as Arne August Oelkers, son of Ernst-August and Annegret (merchant mariner and optometrist, respectively), he grew up in his hometown of Hildesheim (approx. 30 km south of Hannover).

After elementary school he went to the Gymnasium Andreanum, which he left in 1992 with a very mediocre high school diploma. Because the affinity to the sea was apparent early on (he used to always have a rope with him to do knots), he joined the Federal German Navy, where he got to do a journey to the Caribbean Sea and back at government expense with the Frigate Emden.

After this experience Arne did an apprenticeship to become an optician in his mother’s store. At this point he became infected by the virus “Up With People”, and after hosting a couple of times he interviewed at the first chance and was accepted into the January ’97 program. Because of his longtime hobby of playing the trumpet in a brass choir, he became a member of Cast D ‘97th band and spent most of his time on tour in the band pit with the “Mixed Nuts”.
.
Right after the return from his tour through the USA, Norway and Japan, he worked in the technical warehouse of “Up With People” in Denver, before returning to Hildesheim to live in his little world as an optician. This went well until the fall of 1998 and the annual convention of the German Alumni Association of “Up With People”. But this is the start to a whole new story...
Of course Arne’s big hobby is still to mention - the volunteer fire department. Having started in the junior’s program at the age of twelve, Arne steadily climbed the ladder, and today he is a very engaged and active member of the Hildesheim Fire Department.
